Finally, government considers CMO for motion picture industry

THE sordid condition of Nigeria’s intellectual rights environment and the fact that Nigeria has not effectively created an ambiance where intellectual property owners can be adequately rewarded has made the need for establishment of Collective Rights Management Organisations otherwise called CMO’s imperative. Thankfully, Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) recognizes the need for the establishment of CMO’s, which is why it licensed the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) to manage the rights of musical artiste.

Sequel to the seminar and consultation organised by World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) and Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) on IP rights of film practitioners and consultations with audio-visual industry stakeholders held on April 11 to 13 2012 at NFC Lagos Office Screening room, where it was unanimously decided that there is the need for the formation of a CMO to cut down on piracy and protect the rights of Film Professionals.
